No doubt the Philippines is a highly politicized country because of its highly functional democratic system. But, while this must be true, the Philippines is also a highly divided nation because of politics (most likely partisan politics). And with the worsening feud between the Executive and the Judicial branches of the government (or shall we say the President and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court) aren’t we leading to chaos and Constitutional crisis?
Whoever is fomenting that feud should refrain from doing so as further and further the people are becoming demoralized and divided.
Right now Solons in the case of Gregorio Honasan, Panfilo Lacson and Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada Jr are now weary of the deepening enmity between the Malacanang and the Supreme Court and want Congress to intervene or act as the referee between the two clashing branches of the government.
But Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile does not want the Legislative branch (which is a political body too) to intervene but the church talking to both sides. There’s no way according to Enrile that he should talk to both President Benigno Aquino lll and SC Chief Justice Renato Corona “to stop what they’re doing in the same manner that I think they will not tell me to stop what I’m doing.” According to the Senate President, “That’s the essence of the three branches of government.”
Last Monday President Aquino did the unthinkable, lambasting the Supreme Court (with Chief Justice Corona listening around) for coming out with decisions that, he said, derailed his programs for Filipinos which SC spokesman Jose Midas Marquez said the high court found it “quite disturbing.”
Many Filipinos likewise are not happy to see the President in the combative mood lambasting the Supreme Court as he addressed the National Criminal Justice Summit. First he shook hands with the Chief Justice and attacked the SC in front of him which many people think out of time and out of place.
Further the SC spokesman said “It is not at all unusual for the Executive Branch to disagree with the Judicial Branch. But what is considerably unusual is for the Chief Executive to look down on the members of the Judiciary in public at a Justice Sector Coordinating Council session, and to their faces denounce the Court’s independent actions, as the Chief Justice sat speechless, motionless and epressionless because of the requirements of protocol.”
When asked of his reaction on the president’s tirade against him, the SC chief justice calm as usual only said it’s Christmas time and hence to need to forgive. A kind of reaction which even impressed the Justice Secretary who call him (Corona) very professional.
Banat Mayweather ba?
