Some years back I attended a party tendered by friends and officemates of a retiring public official. Unlike when she was newly installed as a department head, she had not been that enthusiastic about initiating changes that would improve performance in her office when she reached 60. Five years of waiting for mandatory retirement was too long for her. There were times she had to be absent to see her doctor because of various illnesses related to aging.
Talks said against her at her back were enormous specially to those aspiring for her position. For five years of waiting for retirement she could not credit herself of large butmidget accomplishments. Unlike president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who had a long lists of accomplishments for 9 years in service as a president, this retiring public official had nothing much to show worth glorifying in her administration (for the past six years) but her honesty and integrity as a public servant.
In President’s Arroyo’s last SONA she portrayed hersel as one highly principled and dedicated public official of the highest post who would rather want to be unpopular for doing the right thing that would make her country economically stable and on the path to progress. If people were to believe everything she said and claimed as accomplishments is real, then this country should not of equal footing anymore with those of ailing economy where a great number of the poor goes hungry everyday. The truth is we are made to believe by a glib-tongued magician that there is already economic boom, social services shaped up, education has been upgraded, peace and order was restored, agricultural productivity is active and that there is plenty of food for all, and infra-structure projects has reached even the most remotest area in the land, etc. (to paraphrase what she said) when she assumed into power. Too bad, what is supposedly a dimunitive achievement has been bloated (a hundreed times perhaps) during her SONA.
This is SONA’s glorification of the president as she comes to the end of her term. Everything she said is applauded well by her cronies and political supporters. In the contrary outside the Congress she was booed by her critics and the general public as well who are already fed up hearing nothing but empty claims, broken promises, and illusions. Many Filipinos can’t just stomach the idea that they owed so much from Gloria; and fear she will never relinquish her throne when her term expired. She did not categorically say so; this is her treat to keep people hanging.
PLEASE BE KIND TO GLORIA
Now that President Arroyo had already delivered her State of the Nation Address in Congress, her son Mickey appeals for respect to his mother particularly to her critics and political foes. He said that “ everything GMA (Ms Arroyo) does not do or does, for them it’s taken in a negative way.” He laments that they “don’t want to give her the courtesy of fairness. ” She did not categorically said that she’s stepping down “but she is stepping down” according to him.
To Mickey never mind if you don’t believe what the president said, never mind if she had swiped presidential wannabes. Just be kind to Gloria, give her even a little respect.
“We’re only appealing to them to just show a little respect. She’s a woman and they’re disrespecting her. Yet this was the first time she stood up and answered them,” he said.
In defense to the president Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said president’s Arroyo’s final SONA is a “fitting valedictory as she prepares to leave office, and a restatement of the vision and mission she will bequeath to her future successor.”
Further he described the SONA as a “stinging rebuke to the critics and oppositionists who have been relentlessly hounding her of late, hoping to make political capital out of her refusal to take the low road they themselves find so congenial for their own ambitions.”
But “History will be a kinder—not to mention, much more objective, responsible, and credible—judge of the President’s legacy than that crowd of wannabes,” according to Remonde.
THE BLESSED CONSTITUTIONAL ASSEMBLY
While the President was delivering her SONA it rained heavily. Is there something being symbolized by a heavy downpour. Is it a premonition of some sinister events to come?
Akbayan party-list Rep. Walden Bello warned on Tuesday that Filipinos should be vigilant and closely watch Ms Arroyo’s actions. She made a little reference about the charter change to preclude Obama’s inquiry on her term extension. Had she not been invited to the White House she could have pushed for cha-cha on her speech. They can not afford to dwell along topic such as charter change that would extend her term as Washingto is very sensitive on issues of “extra-constitutional” changes.
But upon her return to the country it is expected that Con-Ass or charter change will creep again in Congress. They will not stop till the get what they want.
