Is president Arroyo really serious about running as a representative for the second district of Pampanga. If so, professor Randy David is seriously considering to run too against president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. In which case it will be a David against Goliath kind of thing.
“It’s probably the most foolish thing to do. I know it’s quixotic to run against the President—somebody who has no qualms about using all the powers of her office—but I think somebody has to stop her. And if we get to that point, I will do my part even if that may be myself,”Randy David said.
President Arroyo’s reported bid for Congress has been repeatedly denied by her cabinet people although they said she is legally qualified to run. Her son Mickey Arroyo however gives more categorical answer. He’s ready to give up his post should his mom desire to run.
Opposition has criticized the president for running to a much lower position considering that she has nothing else to prove except to avoid possible prosecution on various crimes her administration is possibly linked of. David perceives Mrs. Arroyo’s running for a seat in Congress and the hammering out Charter change towards shift to the parliamentary system of government as a brazen way of doing away with the constitutional ban on presidential election.
On the National level there is no problem of running against Mrs. Arroyo is “the easiest thing in the world because she is the most unpopular president” according to David. It is on the local level politics however that she could still command victory in any electoral contest because of her political machinery and the resources she could possibly draw in her office. Nevertheless David is determined to challenge her if only to put a stop on what she (the president) is doing because it’s already too much.
Pampanga Governor Panlilio however promised to give a good fight on president Arroyo’s running for Congress. They’ll not take this “lying down.” The priest turned politician said that there’s a growing public awareness on the real intention of the President for running as a representative of the second district of Pampanga; “she using the second district of Pampanga for her political plans to protect herself from legal suits later on.”
But who and where will professor David get support for his candidacy? Governor Panlilio when interviewed neither denied nor confirmed that UP professor David is their candidate. But Gary Olivar, one of Mrs. Arroyo’s spokesperson surprisingly pledged support for Randy David. Does this mean that president Arroyo’s supporter and cabinet people are divided on the issue of her running for Congress?
On the other hand Lorelei Fajardo, also a spokesperson for the President, questioned David’s motive in considering to run for a seat in the House by saying, “We should have the right intention and right motive in running, and I think there’s no better intention for us than to serve our country, serve our people and make a good difference.” But what “right intention and right motive” is she talking about?
Randy David’s is running to prevent president Arroyo to perpetuate herself into power beyond 2010. What is more rightful as a motive and an intention of running for Congress than this?
